Description
Coriander is an annual plant of the Apiaceae family. The homeland of the plant is the Mediterranean. In ancient times, coriander was used here as an addition to bread and some dishes. The spice was spread throughout Europe by the Romans and Greeks. It spread much faster in Latin America, where coriander was brought by conquistadors. Today this spice belongs to the group of the most famous and popular in the world.
The plant contains up to 1.5% essential oil, mainly consisting of linalool, although its exact composition varies from species to species and depends on where it is grown. In addition, the composition contains flavonoids, coumarin, phytosterols, carbohydrates and protein compounds. Coriander is characterized by its mild spicy taste, with a hint of nutty sweetness and an orange-cinnamon aftertaste.
Coriander seeds properties and benefits
Coriander seeds have a diastolic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract, stimulate the production of bile and facilitate its passage through the bile ducts. Thus, they speed up the digestion of food and promote the absorption of valuable nutrients. In addition, coriander eliminates flatulence, regulates bowel movements, improves appetite and, at the same time, slightly disinfects the gastrointestinal tract, facilitating the coughing up of mucus from colds and flu in the respiratory tract.
The ingredients contained in the plant oil are used in aromatherapy to promote calm and relaxation. Coriander is also useful for heart diseases. Infusions prepared with milk instead of water are effective for coughs, runny nose and colds.
Coriander seeds use in cooking (dishes)
Coriander seeds are a common ingredient in Indian and Arabic blended seasonings such as curry, garam masala, baccarat and harissa. They are used to prepare dishes from carrots, cabbage, pumpkin and turnips, as well as legumes. Coriander is suitable for marinating fish and meat, including poultry and game, and is also increasingly used in Mediterranean cuisine for preserving cucumbers, mushrooms and vegetable pickles.
Pairs well with fresh vegetables, served with balsamic vinegar. In addition, the spice can be a component of sweet pastries and desserts (especially gingerbread and spiced cookies). Combined with anise, fennel and cumin, it is used as a spice for bread. Sometimes it is also added to alcoholic drinks to add a special flavor.
Contraindications
Due to the lack of appropriate tests in this direction, it is not recommended for pregnant women and nursing mothers. Coriander oil increases skin sensitivity to ultraviolet rays, so when taking herbal preparations based on this plant, it is recommended to limit exposure to the sun. Due to the blockade of substances that ensure the absorption of vitamin B1, when regularly taking herbal mixtures with the addition of coriander, it is recommended to consume an increased amount of this vitamin.
